Col. William F. Cody Historical Picture Company and Essanay Film Manufacturing Company production; distributed on State Rights basis. / Scenario by [?] Charles A. King? Technical advisor, Lieutenant General Nelson Appleton Miles. Cinematography by D.T. Hargan + [Conrad Luperti]. / Released August 1914. / Standard 35mm spherical 1.33:1 format. / The production was shot on-location on the Pine Ridge Reservation, South Dakota, in 1913. The Charles King of this cast is one of the original battle soldiers and is not the same as Charles King of the late 1920s. Contemporary reports from 1917 indicate that the original title was Wars of Civilization and the length was eight reels. The film was apparently only shown in New York, New York, and in Denver, Colorado, due governmental pressure to suppress the somewhat pro-Native American film. [?] The alternate title Indian War Pictures may have been confused by contemporary sources with the Edison film, Indian War Pictures (1894). This film was reedited and released as the biographical film The Adventures of Buffalo Bill (1917) after Cody’s January 1917 death.
