Originally planned as Griffith’s third production for them, First National Pictures announced the film’s release for 15 May 1920 but was held after Griffith had previewed the film on 2 April 1920 at the American Newspaper Publishers Association in New York, New York. Griffith purchased the film from First National for $400,000 and arranged for a United Artists release after Griffith shot additional scenes of Dempster diving.
