Charles Winninger was born into a show business family, whose act was known as the Winninger Family Concert Company. After years of stage work, Winninger made a few appearances in comedy shorts around 1915-1916 and made a handful of appearances in feature films of the 1920s. The stage-centric Winninger is most-associated with the role of Cap’n Andy in the 1927 Broadway production of Show Boat.
The bulk of Winninger’s film work occurred in the golden era of film.
