This first of three collections from Warner Home Video of the Max Fleischer Popeye cartoons collects the films in chronological release order. The Popeye cartoons are presented from 35mm prints, with the exception of Let’s Sing with Popeye, and the silent era cartoons are mostly from 16mm.

After decades of watching Popeye the Sailor Meets Sindbad the Sailor (1936) and Popeye the Sailor Meets Ali Baba’s Forty Thieves (1938) in substandard 16mm television prints, the presentations from 35mm Technicolor prints are a revelation.

The silent era Fleischer films available in this DVD collection are The Tantalizing Fly (1919), Invisible Ink (1921), Modeling (1921), Bubbles (1922), Jumping Beans (1922), Bed Time (1923), Trapped (1923), A Trip to Mars (1924), Ko-Ko Trains ’em (1925) and Ko-Ko Back Tracks (1927), with these additional silent era cartoons, Colonel Heeza Liar At the Bat (1915), Krazy Kat Goes A-Wooing (1916), Domestic Difficulties (1916), Bobby Bumps Puts a Beanery on the Bum (1918), and the prototypical Felix the Cat cartoon Feline Follies (1919). Most of these cartoons have been transferred from 16mm reduction prints (the only format in which they survive), with a very few from 35mm prints.

Most of the silent era cartoons are presented without musical accompaniment.

A highly recommended collection, but it is getting harder to find.
