About the
PAL Standard
Television Format

The PAL format (Phase Alternating Line) is the standard-definition
television format for the countries of western Europe, including the
United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Germany and other countries. The
PAL video format definition is 25 interlaced frames per second, 625
resolution lines per video frame.

Home video products for use in Europe should be in the PAL format
to properly display both picture and sound. However, home video
products manufactured in the NTSC and SECAM television formats
may image properly on PAL television systems, as those disc players
often have built-in cross-format compatibility.

As with other standard television formats, PAL is being phased out
for the generally universal AVCHD high-definition format.
