The Devil’s
Assistant
(1917)
|
This social drama, written and directed by Harry A. Pollard, stars Margarita Fischer and Jack Mower, with support from Monroe Salisbury, Kathleen Kirkham, Jack Mower and Joe Harris.
The film makes a good companion film to The Devil’s Needle (1916), an earlier anti-drug abuse social drama.

This DVD-R edition has been mastered from an abbreviated preservation 35mm print, duplicated by the USC Hugh M. Hefner Moving Image Archive, which was copied from a nitrate 35mm print in active decomposition. The resulting picture looks as if the source print were 16mm as picture details are soft and a bit contrasty. The momentary nitrate decomposition is rarely distracting.
The film is accompanied by a music score performed on theater pipe organ by Andrew Earle Simpson.
