Speedy
(1928)
|
This Harold Lloyd feature comedy, directed by Ted Wilde, features Ann Christy, Bert Woodruff, Brooks Benedict, and an appearance by ‘Babe’ Ruth as himself.
Ambitious Harold can’t keep a job but helps his girlfriend’s grandfather avoid being taken advantage of by big business tycoons.
The film features many instances of historical records of New York streets, landmarks and sights, especially Coney Island’s Luna Park.
One last word: Damn Yankees!

This Blu-ray Disc edition has been mastered in high-definition from a 4K digital restoration of excellent archival 35mm print materials held by UCLA Film and Television Archive. Print flaws such as dust, speckling, wear, exposure fluctuations, timing marks, visible splices and other are virtually nonexistant. The viewing experience is wonderful.
The film is accompanied by the 1992 musical score by composer Carl Davis, which has been restored and synchronized under his supervision.
Supplementary materials include audio commentary featuring Bruce Goldstein and Scott McGee; “In the Footsteps of ‘Speedy,’” a new short documentary by Goldstein about the film’s New York locations; a new visual essay featuring stills of deleted scenes from the film and narrated by Goldstein; a selection of archival footage of baseball legend Babe Ruth; a selection of Lloyd’s home movies narrated by his granddaughter, Suzanne Lloyd; a presentation of Bumping Into Broadway (1919), newly restored and featuring a 2004 score by Robert Israel; plus, a 12-page insert booklet featuring an essay by critic Phillip Lopate.
This is our recommended home video edition of the film.

This two-disc DVD collection is mastered from 35mm restoration prints overseen by The Harold Lloyd Trust, which should represent the best-surviving prints of these seven Harold Lloyd shorts and feature films. Speedy and Haunted Spooks are presented with audio commentary by Annette D’Agostino Lloyd and Rich Correll.
Previously, this was the best-available edition of this wonderful film, but it is OUT-OF-PRINT and we now recommend the Criterion Collection editions noted above.
