This PAL DVD edition has been mastered from a reconstruction version of the film supervised by director Diamant-Berger’s nephew, Jérôme Diamant-Berger with Guillaume Diamant-Berger. It is unknown whether the restoration contains the original Max Handschiegl hand color engraving process sequences. By consumer accounts, this edition is identical to the TFI Video edition noted below.
The film is apparently accompanied by a music score, sound effects and voice-over narration (presumably in French). It appears that there are no English language subtitles.
Supplemental material includes a featurette on Diamant-Berger, “Le cinéma de Grand-Père” (70 minutes); featurette “Histoire d’une résurrection” on the restoration of the serial (52 minutes); and a photo gallery.
This is our recommended home video edition of the film. North American collectors will need a region-free PAL DVD player capable of outputting an NTSC-compatible signal to view this edition.
