This PAL DVD edition has been mastered from the digital restoration by Munich Filmmuseum utilizing the original 35mm nitrate camera negative supplied by Bundesarchiv, with reel three supplied from a 35mm print held by Gosfilmofond.
The film is accompanied by two optional music scores: an orchestral score composed by Richard Siedhoff, and performed by the Metopolis-Orchester Berlin, conducted by Burkhard Götze; and a score composed and performed on piano by Richard Siedhoff.
Supplemental material includes Lupu Pick’s Scherben (1921) with music by Christian Roderburg, performed by the Filmmusik-Ensemble of the Musikhochschule in Wuppertal (66 minutes); featurette Musik für Murnau with composer Richard Siedhoff (30 minutes); and a 20-page trilingual (German, English and French) insert booklet with writings by Stefan Drössler, Werner Sudendorf, Anton Kaes, Richard Siedhoff and Louis Delluc.
This is our recommended home video edition of the film. North American collectors will need a region-free PAL DVD player capable of outputting an NTSC-compatible signal to view this edition.
