This DVD edition has been mastered from Australia’s National Film and Sound Archive 35mm restoration of the surviving fragments of The Story of the Kelly Gang, at approximately 31 minutes, including intertitles and still images.
The edition, curated by Graham Shirley, includes two audio commentaries on the Australian and worldwide significance of the film (an informal conversation between Sally Jackson and Graham Shirley discussing the film’s restoration, and an international commentary by professor Ian Christie), along with optional soundtracks (a traditional piano score by Mauro Colombis and a new experimental score composed by Endorphin), alternate viewing modes, and an image gallery. The package includes a 208-page book on the restoration and importance of the film by Kelly historians Ina Bertrand and Bill Routt.
North American collectors will need a region-free PAL DVD player capable of outputting an NTSC-compatible signal to view this edition.
